July - Wish On a Star
On a rainy Sunday, while strolling in a shopping mall, I found a bamboo tree decoration for the Tanabata Star Festival.
Pens and oblong shaped papers were set to one side on which people could write their wishes and the papers already hanging from the tree had such messages as “I wish I could be a great footballer,” or “I want to meet my friend in America.” They were all written in childlike handwriting.
Wanting to decorate my own wish card, but failing to see the cards of any other adults, I wondered whether this event was targeting only children or that adults were just refraining from joining the event for their own reasons. In the end I decided that I should leave such opportunities to children and would instead simply enjoy reading children’s wishes hanging on the tree while limiting my own wishes to my imagination.
July 7th is the date of the Tanabata Star Festival. This event has its origins in the Chinese legend of the stars, the Altair and the Vega. A ‘cowboy’ named “Hikoboshi” (Altair) and the “Princess Orihime” (Vega), a weaver of clothes, fell in love and got married. They loved each other deeply and lost interest in their jobs. This made God angry and these two stars were separated, destined to spend almost all of their time on opposite sides of the Milky Way with only one day to be set aside for them to get together. This happens each year on the day of Tanabata - July 7th.
To celebrate the Tanabata Star Festival, Japanese people decorate bamboo trees with wish cards and ornaments. This tradition first started during the 15th century - in the Edo period. As did many Japanese in their childhood, I also sung a Tanabata song and enjoyed decorating bamboo in my kindergarten and elementary school. Celebrating the night of Tanabata, we always hoped for a clear sky so that the two stars can easily ‘meet.’ This wish is not always realized nowadays as July 7th on the solar calendar falls within the Japanese rainy season. When I see no stars due to the rain on July 7th, I realize that nature will forever be beyond our control.
On the evening of Tanabata this year I would like to eat adzuki bean jelly stuffed in bamboo - a form of Japanese confectionery seen in summer. Savoring the fresh bamboo flavor, I’m going to think about my own wish and if I were allowed to get whatever I wanted just once a year, what I would opt for. I shouldn’t wish for too much or be selfish of course and these feelings make me feel sorry for Hikoboshi and Orihime who work so hard yearlong as they waiting for that one, special date. I believe they deserve more.
This month signals the end of the rainy season and as the amount of rain decreases we often become more and more impatient about waiting for the summer, but, to distract us for a short time, as Tanabata festivals are held all over Japan, almost everywhere you look you will see Tanabata trees decorated with cards wishing for concepts such as “brisk business” etc. If you are offered a blank paper on which to write your wish, will you find it easy to do so immediately? I wonder if I could?
It is hard for me to select from so many options so I will just write a wish for Hikoboshi and Orihime, so they can have a fair day this July 7th.

七夕祭りと竹筒羊羹
雨の日曜日、近所のショッピングモールをぶらついていたら、七夕の笹飾りを見つけた。そばに備えつけの短冊とペンがおいてあり、買い物客に自由に飾ってもらおうという趣向らしい。すでにつるされている短冊には、「サッカーが上手になりますように」、「アメリカにいる友達に会えますように」と、子どもらしい文字が並ぶ。私も一枚。そう思ったけれど、大人の文字の短冊が見当たらない。子どもを対象としたイベントなのか、単に大人たちが遠慮しているだけなのかわからないが、私も願いごとのスペースを子どもたちにゆずることにした。他の短冊に書かれた可愛らしい願いごとを読みながら、自分だったら何を願うかな、と考える。
7月7日は七夕。このお祭りは、愛し合って夫婦になった牛追いの彦星（わし座の一等星アルタイル）と機織りの織姫星（琴座の一等星ベガ）にまつわる、中国の伝説が起源となっている。あまりにも仲がよすぎて、それぞれの仕事をおろそかにしてしまった二人は、天帝の怒りによって離れ離れにされてしまう。七夕は、一年に一度、この二つの星が一緒になることを許される大切な日。この日、笹の葉に願い事を書いた短冊や飾りをつるす風習は、江戸時代に広まった日本独特の風習である。幼稚園や小学校で、七夕の歌を歌い、短冊に願い事をかいて笹を飾った思い出を持つ人は多いだろう。彦星と織姫星のために「７月７日は晴れますように」という短冊を飾った人もいるだろう。愛する人に会いたいという願いが、一年に一度だけ叶えられるという伝説は、とても切ない。しかも、太陽暦で数えられる現代の七夕は、まだまだ梅雨の季節。晴れた夜空に二つの星が輝く確率は、とても低いのだ。「晴れますように」という願いもむなしく、雨雲に覆われて星の見えない七夕の夜空を見上げる時、私は、人の手でコントロールできない自然というものを実感する。
七夕の夜、私は竹筒羊羹をいただきたい。小豆と砂糖で作った水羊羹を竹筒の中に流し込んで冷やし固めた、夏の和菓子である。清涼な竹の香りを味わいながら、真剣に考えてみよう。「一年に一度だけといわれたら、どんな願いを叶えてもらおうか？」この問いは、とても難しい。何と言っても一年に一度なのだ。欲張らない潔さが必要である。ないものねだりのような、我が儘な希望は捨てなければならない。そう思うと、たった一日だけの再会を待ちながら一年間仕事に励む彦星と織姫星にだって、叶えてほしい願い事はたくさんあるだろうに、と同情したくなる。
梅雨の終わりのこの季節、雨が弱まるにつれて、夏への期待が高まっていく。七夕の日にちなんで、各地の商店街ではお祭りが催され、「商売繁盛」などの短冊をさげた笹飾りが目立つようになる。「ひとつだけ、願い事をどうぞ」そう言って短冊とペンを差し出された時、あなたは迷わずに何か書くことができますか？何を願おうかまだ迷っている私は、彦星と織姫星のためにとりあえず一枚。「七夕の夜は晴れますように」とだけ書いておこう。
