  • A Thousand Years of The Tale of Genji Exhibition

    Date: August 30th (Sat)-November 3rd (Mon), 2008
Place: Yokohama Museum of Art (Minatomirai, Yokohama)

The tale of Genji is a greatly revered masterpiece written a thousand years ago. The tale tells about the life of a man, the son of an emperor. His name, Hikaru Genji or "Shining Genji," written 源氏, is also read to mean the historical Minamoto clan (源の氏 Minamoto-no-Uji) in which he was made to join. For political reasons he was demoted to "commoner" status for bearing such a name. The intricate tale revolves around Genji's romantic life and depicts in great detail the customs and traditions of the aristocratic society at the time.

    GeGeGe no Kitaro - Yokai

There are many Yokai or monsters that appear in Japanese folklore, art and literature of old. These days they are much more prevalent in manga and Japanese horror. About Yokai, please refer to the Tottori/Shimane article in the issue 41 of att.JAPAN.

In showing respect to Mizuki Shigeru, the man who created GeGeGe no Kitaro and kept Yokai in popular imagination, we are giving away 5 Tenugui (traditional towels) and 5 Sensu (folding fans) of Onsen Medama Oyaji.
