Manto Kuyo-e, a lantern memorial service for the dead, is held in the whole of Mt. Daigo to pray for the spirits of ancestors, and to show respect and appreciation for our lives. "Yoru mairi" is held in Kami-Daigo, with lanterns lighting up a path for the spirits, and "Shoryo Kuyo" and "Osegaki Kuyo" ceremonies are held under about 1,000 lanterns in Shimo-Daigo. The Kondo hall and the five-story pagoda are specially lit up on the day and create a fantastic, other-worldly atmosphere.
