MORIOKA

Morioka City is the capital of Iwate Prefecture.

In former times it flourished as a castle town and today it is a quiet, calm, and green city, pleasant to explore on foot. Around the eastern side of the Nakatsu River there are some historical buildings of interest, including Kamasada famous for Nambu Tekki cast ironware, Moriku Shoten, a shop dealing in bamboo baskets and strainers and nicknamed "Gozakyu" by locals, and Himekuri showcasing craftworks of artists who live in Iwate. Nambu Tekki ironware may be a good souvenir. This area, Konya-cho, flourished based on its dyeing industry in the past. In those days many warehouses lined the street, but only one remains now. Issaryo is a gallery and café using a renovated warehouse. Kogensha in Zaimoku-cho near Morioka Station deals with quality craftworks. Its café, Kohikan, and annex, Morio, are also interesting.
